Since batteries were first introduced in the early 1800's their design has remained virtually unchanged: a mono-polar battery built either cylindrical or square.
In fact, if you were to put a standard AA battery manufactured in 1930 next to one produced today- you'd notice very little difference.
The problem with a mono-polar design is that is uses its space and conducts energy very poorly.
That's why the AA's you have in your digital camera run out of juice after just a couple of hours – sending you right back to the store.
You see, for a mono-polar battery to work its current must pass thought a long resistive pathway on a plane of electrodes. Along this path the current flows through a complex series of wire grids, tabs and interconnections.
